Your eyes do not deceive you: Novo Fogo is launching in Europe! This is an exciting next step for us as we spread the joys of organic and barrel-aged cachaças on a new continent that has long shared cultural ties to Brazil.
In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, large numbers of European immigrants arrived in southern Brazil, predominantly from Portugal, Germany, Italy, and Spain. (In the twentieth century, large number of Japanese immigrants arrived in Brazil, too.) The European cultural influence on southern Brazil persists to this day.
In fact, modern Brazil’s preference for barrel-aged cachaça is directly connected to the Europeans’ history in the country. European settlers used wooden wine barrels to transport cachaça from the coast to inland regions as they pursued natural resources like gold and minerals that were discovered in Minas Gerais. The barrel’s delicious impact on the cachaça’s flavor, color, and aroma became a broadly-adopted mainstay for producing the spirit. Barrel-aging cachaça has been popularly practiced ever since, and American oak is Brazil’s new standard for aging quality cachaças.
This April, Novo Fogo’s first steps on the European continent are taking us to Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, and France. Our CEO, Dragos Axinte, is hosting tasting seminars in the cities listed below, where he will explain why cachaça matters while guiding guests through a pairing of four Novo Fogo expressions served with lunchtime bites. During each seminar we’ll introduce Fulgencio Torres Viruel, the founder of the Novo Fogo distillery, via a live video session. From across the globe guests will be part of this distillery tour in the Atlantic Rainforest.
